Firegirl

This week I am reviewing Firegirl, by Tony Abbot.

Firegirl is a book about a girl named Jessica, who moves to a new school, Tom’s School.

There is something different about Jessica.   She is not like the other kids.   Everyone is afraid of her, including Tom.   Slowly, Tom and Jessica become friends.  But, there is a lot of drama on the way.

Jessica Feeney is a burn victim who has moved to this new town to receive medical attention.    She has become dis-figured by her injuries and the students in her new school cannot bring themselves to look at her.    Rumors begin to fly about how Jessica was

burned in the fire  Tom Bender learns the truth about Jessica…..which sets off a friendship that changes his

outlook on life.

My favorite part of the book was when they were saying prayers,  Tom held Jessica’s hand, even though he didn’t want to,  while Jeff stood there with his hands in his pockets.

I think it was very powerful because it showed their personalities and attitude toward Jessica.

Questions:

How would you react if you were in Jessica’s position?

Would you defend yourself against those making fun of you?   Or would you ignore them because you know that there are more important things in life?

Have you ever known anyone who was dis-figured?

Has anyone had an impact on you to change your outlook towards people?
